Bell Ringing

Ring a bell and follow its tone all the way down into silence — then ring again. The fading sound gives your attention a clear, moving target.

What you need
Nothing — the app rings the bell for you (a real bell or singing bowl is optional)

Safety notes

  • Keep the volume comfortable, especially with headphones.

How to practice

  1. 1. Settle

Sit comfortably and take a few easy breaths.

  2. 2. Ring

Tap the bell. Listen from the very first moment of sound.

  3. 3. Follow the fade

Keep your attention on the tone as it grows quieter and quieter. Follow it all the way into silence.

  4. 4. Rest, then ring again

Sit in the silence for a breath or two — then ring again and follow the next tone.

How it works

A struck bell produces a tone that slowly fades to nothing. Following that fade asks for continuous, fine attention right up to the moment of silence — a clear, self-renewing object for concentration. Each new strike gives the mind a fresh, unmistakable thing to land on, which suits a restless mind better than open silence.

Potential benefits

  • A clear start and end point for attention each round
  • Trains the mind to follow one sound to its very end
  • Naturally calming and very simple
  • Ideal for short, frequent sittings

Tips

  • The aim is to catch the exact moment the sound disappears.
  • Have a real bell or singing bowl? Use it — otherwise the app rings one for you.
